Comments: This Airbus A330-303 VH-QPF (msn 595) of QANTAS Airways was used in the successful search and rescue mission of American teenage sailor Abby Sunderland on April 11, 2010. The American teenager was attempting to circumnavigate the world in a sailboat alone when a storm disabled her vessel in the Indian Ocean. VH-QPF flew five and a half hours from Perth to reach the assumed location of Ms Sunderland, which was approximately midway between Western Australia and South Africa. After reaching the location, the aircraft spent two hours hovering over the vessel to enable radio contact between the sailor and Australian Maritime Safety Authority spotters and also Federal Police, who were onboard the aircraft.
