Continental Airlines Continental 720B N57204 (62)(Grd)(JG)(LR) 904724
Comments: Continental Airlines entered the pure-jet age on June 5, 1959 when its first Boeing 707-124 "Golden Jet" debuted on the Los Angeles-Chicago (O'Hare) route. The CAB awarded CO the coveted Los Angles-Houston route (the company was based in LA in those days) and more Boeings were needed. CO announced it was ordering four of the shorter Boeing 720-024B for its new routes. The first to arrive, N75201 (msn 18416), was accepted on April 30, 1962 and entered revenue service on June 3, 1962 on the Los Angeles-Denver-Chicago (O'Hare) route. The pictured 720-024B N57204 (msn 18419) arrived later on July 9, 1962 as the fourth 720B. Eventually CO would operate eight 720Bs. The arrival of the 720Bs would also trigger a small departure in the Golden Jet livery. The thin red and blue stripes were replaced with gold and black stripes and a oval logo as displayed in this picture. Copyright Photo: Jacques Guillem Collection.
